FICTION: Daddy’s Little Girl by Emily Hagerman

She smiled up at him. “What color do you want?”

He just grinned back in response, giving her permission to choose for him.

“Okay, pink,” she said. “Pink’s my favorite color.”

Her little dimples showed on each side of her wide smile as she unscrewed the cap and dunked the brush a couple of times into the bottle of lurid liquid pink. Grabbing one of his fingers, she pulled it towards her and then with painful care, slowly stroked the sparkling paint over his fingernail. Nose scrunched in concentration, she repeated the process for his other nine fingers. Pleased with her handiwork, she looked up at him. He grinned down at her.

“ Sweetie, that’s enough playing with Daddy now! You’re going to catch a cold. Come eat your dinner.”

“Okay, Mommy!” Turning to the man in the chair, she bobbed a little curtsy, her frost – tipped pigtails bouncing. “Bye Daddy.”

She opened the door and skipped out of the freezer, bottle of nail polish in hand.
