Description:
Another outstanding adventure from one of the world's best loved storytellers
Hazel Bannock is the heir to the Bannock Oil Corp, one of the major oil producers with global reach. While cruising in the Indian Ocean, Hazel's private yacht is hijacked by African pirates. Hazel is not on board at the time, but her nineteen year old daughter, Cayla, is kidnapped and held to ransom. The pirates demand a crippling twenty billion dollar ransom for her release. Complicated political and diplomatic considerations render the civilized major powers incapable of intervening.
When Hazel is given evidence of the horrific torture which Cayla is being subjected to, she calls on Hector Cross to help her rescue her daughter. Hector is the owner and operator of Cross Bow Security, the company which is contracted to Bannock Oil to provide all their security. He is a formidable fighting man. Between them Hazel and Hector are determined to take the law into their own hands.
Author Information
Wilbur Smith was born in Central Africa in 1933. He was educated at Michaelhouse and Rhodes University. He became a full-time writer in 1964 after the successful publication of When the Lion Feeds, and has since written over thirty novels, all meticulously researched on his numerous expeditions worldwide. His books are now translated into twenty-six languages.
Review:
Those in Peril deals with a very topical subject, modern-day piracy. The private yacht of a rich oil baroness, Hazel Bannock, is hijacked by pirates and her daughter held for ransom. When legal means of recovering her daughter prove fruitless, she turns to the ex-military head of her private security; a man she doesn’t trust or respect, but who will take actions that governments can’t or won’t.
The main character, Hector Cross, is an intelligent strong willed man of action who is employed as head of security for an oil company. Hazel Bannock is a strong, independent widow who inherited the company from her late husband and has since greatly increased its worth. When the yacht carrying Hazel's daughter Cayla is attacked and Cayla is kidnapped for ransom, the action really takes off. Hector plans, coordinates, and executes the mission to rescue Cayla. Along the way he and Hazel and his team have to deal with betrayal by someone they trusted, gun fights, car chases over brutal terrain, and injury to those they care about. Around the middle of novel, after I thought the action part was over, a new round of action begins as Hector and Hazel put in place a plan to exact revenge on those responsible for horrendous acts.
It is well written, sometimes with brutal and chilling descriptions of the violence, but also with good description of how living through the dangerous events draws the main characters together and sparks romance and lasting relationships.
Overall I would recommend this novel to anyone interested in a good action thriller. I noticed that Wilbur Smith has written quite a few other novels, and I would like to read more from this author.

BOOK REVIEW: The Inspector and Silence

Author: Hakan Nesser

RRP: $22.99
ISBN: 9780330512503
Release Date: June 2011
Pages: 288
Description:
In the heart of summer, the country swelters in a fog of heat. In the beautiful forested lake-town of Sorbinowo, Sergeant Merwin Kluuge's tranquil existence is shattered when he receives a phone-call from an anonymous woman. She tells him that a girl has gone missing from the summer camp of the mysterious The Pure Life, a religious sect buried deep in the woods. Chief Inspector Van Veeteren is recruited to help solve the mystery.
But Van Veeteren's investigations at The Pure Life go nowhere fast. The strange priest-like figure who leads the sect–Oscar Yellineck–refuses even to admit anyone is missing. Things soon take a sinister turn, however, when a young girl's body is discovered in the woods, raped and strangled; and Yellineck himself disappears. Yet even in the face of these new horrors, the remaining members of the sect refuse to co-operate with Van Veeteren, remaining largely silent.
As the body count rises, media frenzy descends upon the town and the pressure to find the monster behind the murders weighs heavily on the investigative team. Finally Van Veeteren realizes that to solve this disturbing case, faced with silence and with few clues to follow, he has only his intuition to rely on...

The Van Veeteren series is published in over 25 countries and has sold over 5 million copies worldwide. Review:
In Håkan Nesser's "The Inspector and Silence," Chief Inspector Van Veeteren (VV) is thinking seriously about calling it quits after approximately thirty-five years in the Swedish police force. He is fed up with "rooting around in the rubbish heaps of his environment." A ridge of high pressure has brought extraordinarily hot weather. VV's irritable and sweat-drenched subordinates banter, curse, and insult one another as a way of blowing off steam. Although he is planning to take a vacation in Crete, a new and disturbing case comes along that calls for VV's unique blend of experience, insight, and intuition.
Van Veetern leaves Maardam and travels to Sorbinowo to help Acting Chief of Police Merwin Kluuge look into the disappearance of a thirteen-year-old girl from a camp run by Oscar Yellinek, the founder of the Pure Life "free-church community." This sect is devoted to cleansing souls and achieving enlightenment through "prayers, self-denial, [and] purity." Since Yellinek, his female assistants, and the adolescent girls staying at the camp are highly secretive, the investigation gets off to a rocky start. VV, who usually chews toothpicks to avoid cigarettes, reverts to his bad old ways. He smokes, drinks too much, and becomes more and more frustrated by his lack of progress.
And to top this off, strange religious cults can be found all over the world and though it may seem unusual to think of Sweden as a place to find one, but it has.
Van Veeteren is a curious and colourful character - ready to give it all up, over the years he's been complaining of becoming increasingly disillusioned with police life & law enforcement. I love it when authors who write novels with a recurring main character give the character some real-life quirks - such as Van Veeteren's penchant for Menthol toothpicks (I used to love those too, still do when I can find them), badminton, is a bit grumpy and cynical, enjoys dark beer and chess.
The storyline is well thought out and planned with a variety of red herrings thrown in for good measure. The characters all play second fiddle to Van Veeteren's protagonist role but the humour and camaraderie of his fellow officers a delight to read - especially Suijderbeck and his artificial leg that stands up during a briefing to proclaim "my artificial leg is itching"!
A great read and one that will no doubt be compared to Steig Larrson.

BOOK REVIEW: A Game of Thrones
Title: A Game of Thrones
Author: George R R Martin
Publisher: Harper Collins
RRP: $19.99
ISBN: 978007428540
Release Date: July 2011
Pages: 864
Description:
During 2011, the first volume of George R R Martin′s glorious high fantasy will be aired as an HBO series on Foxtel.
Martin unfolds with astonishing skill a tale of truly epic dimensions, thronged with memorable characters, a story of treachery and ambition, love and magic. Set in a fabulous world scarred by battle and catastrophe over 8000 years of recorded history, it tells of the deeds of men and women locked in the deadliest of conflicts and the terrible legacy they will leave their children.
In the game of thrones, you win or you die.
Review:
I have never read any of George R R Martin’s books before, and I have absolutely no idea why? It was only when seeing the ads for the new television series and being enthralled that I decided that I just had to give the books a go.
The novel is in a fantasy continent that bears a familiarity to Middle Ages England, Winter is coming. Winter in this world means a sort of mini ice age that will last for seven years before receding. In the always-frosty Northern area, the races of nonhuman beings are gathering to advance with the snows; there are hints that there is an ancient, evil power behind their forces. At the same time in the South, political infighting for the Throne has begun. Overseas, the daughter of the dispossessed former King is manoeuvring forces of her own for a bid for the throne. All this is told through the various stories of both "good guys" and not-so-good guys.
For starters, AGOT can't be accurately compared to any other book or series in the Fantasy genre. The nearest thing of its type is the laborious Wheel of Time series by Jordan - see what I mean? And yet this first in the Song of Ice and Fire series is fathoms above that aimless, droning style. Martin has perfected what Jordan had arguably introduced; the multiple characters' points of view telling the vast saga on an intimate, up-close scale. Never did I feel that I was being strung along, but rather lead by increments toward an incredible revelation somewhere up ahead. Martin builds the suspense masterfully in each book.
But by far the most striking thing about the Song of Ice and Fire is the "rules" that the author breaks. Martin is not afraid to tell the tale from the point of view of some very unlikable, even immoral characters. He is bold about revealing facts from a character's past that challenge one's impressions and assumptions about their ethics. He does not lay all his cards on the table up front, but rather unexpectedly reveals details that later change the whole picture and twist the plot admirably. And his most unusual move: this author even allows "favourites" to die occasionally! These risks pay off well to serve the story as a whole, bring a sense of true humanity to the people of this world and drive the reader on to the next series instalment.

Review:
Rogue Gadda is the third and final book in the Dream of Asarli series by Aussie author Nicole Murphy. I have been looking forward to reading this book since finishing the second book last year.
The beauty of this book, other than the fantastic writing, engaging characters and interesting story that kept me flipping through pages at lightning speed, was that I feel like the trilogy was wrapped up but at the same time there are plenty of things she could do with world/race of gadda and I will be there for all of them. I have always loved the originality and unique angle of magic of Murphy and she is fast becoming one of my favourite authors.
If you have enjoyed the fast paced plot and great characters of Murphy’s series then you will absolutely love the last book in the trilogy. The story is wound up nicely and there is nothing left unresolved, but enough for the story to be continued in another set of books.

BOOK REVIEW: Kiss & Die
Title: Kiss & Die
Author: Lee Weeks
Publisher: Harper Collins
RRP: $22.99
ISBN: 9781847561275
Release Date: May 2011
Pages: 456
Description:
Ruby is looking for love-- but her kiss is deadly! A serial killer is on the loose and it appears to be a woman--her target, adulterous businessmen. After picking them up in bars, she brutally tortures her victims before decapitating them. Meanwhile, Hong Kong detective Johnny Mann is still struggling to deal with his dead father's legacy of corruption and triad involvement. His nemesis CK Leung is determined to bring Johnny into the triad fold and has now deployed the most dangerous weapon--his daughter Victoria--beautiful but deadly. Falling into a downward spiral, Johnny is on the verge of destroying everything he holds dear while Ruby continues her terrifying murder spree. Johnny needs to pull himself together fast, because Ruby is getting nearer and is closing in for the kill! A nerve-shredding thriller that will grip fans of James Patterson and Karen Rose
Review:
We are still in Hong Kong, Mann is still trying to overcome the murder of his only true love (in book one) and he is still up against the unemotional and lethal CK Leung, head of the main Triad group.
In this book, there is a second and far more brutal storyline taking place: a serial killer is making inroads into the travelling businessmen population who trawl the bars for a 'good time'. Ruby provides the hope of such expectations with a gory and terminal ending. It is not clear as to her motive in all this but, eventually, when it's rather too late, we do discover who she is and why she does what she has to do.
Added to all this, if wasn't enough for the long-suffering Johnny Mann, he has to fend off the less than amorous advances of CK's exceptionally beautiful daughter, Victoria, who, it seems, can run rings round her father's old-fashioned way of dealing with his troublesome enemies (and friends).
All-in-all, Ms Weeks has built up well the character of her protagonist but whether he will survive another outing remains to be seen. Some doors close in this book but others remain open but will Mann be able to cope? Probably. In any event, I shall await next year's release with some enthusiasm to see where we go this time.
The fourth in the Johnny Mann series, and probably the most violent to date. Not recommended for those of a nervous or squeamish disposition since it contains vivid and detailed descriptions of torture and murder by a serial killer. Never the less, Johnny Mann achieves further progress in his fight with the triads and his nemesis CK Leung. Another page turner from Lee Weeks.

Pages: 320
Description:
What if you knew exactly when you would die? Thanks to modern science, every human being has become a ticking genetic time bomb -- males only live to age twenty-five and females only live to age twenty. In this bleak landscape, young girls are kidnapped and forced into polygamous marriages to keep the population from dying out.
When sixteen-year-old Rhine Ellery is taken by the Gatherers to become a bride, she enters a world of wealth and privilege. Despite her husband Linden′s geniune love for her, and a tenuous trust amoung her sister wives, Rhine has one purpose: to escape -- to find her twin brother and go home.
But Rhine has more to contend with than losing her freedom. Linden′s eccentric father is bent on finding an antidote to the genetic virus that is getting closer to taking his son, even if it means collecting corpses in order to test his experiments. With the help of Gabriel, a servant she trusts, Rhine attempts to break free, in the limited time she has left.
Review:
Rhine is a 16-year-old girl and the narrator of the story, who has been sold as one of three new wives to a wealthy man who's first love and current wife is dying. She has an absolutely gorgeous mind from which she describes the richness around her and though not all of that richness is positive it is fully tangible by the time she finishes. Ms. DeStefano has such a way with phrasing that it often made this sci-fantasy sound like literature a la Jane Austen or Charlotte Bronte.
Scientist thought they have finally figured out a way to genetically engineer superior children. These children would not get sick and would be virtually immortal. They were mostly correct. The second generation of superior children were stricken with a virus and now females are all dying around the age of 20 and men at 25. Now women are being kidnapped and sold into marriages so that they will bear children before they succumb to the virus. Rhine is kidnapped and sold with two other girls to 20 year old Linden Ashby. On one hand Rhine has been removed from a life full of hardship to one where she is surrounded by luxury, and despite the whole kidnapping thing Linden Asby isn't so bad. On the other hand she was kidnapped and Rhine does not want to live her last four years of life as a slave in a polygamous marriage.
The other characters in the story are distinct and unmuddled as can sometimes happen in a first person narrative because the narrator doesn't know the feelings or thoughts of those around them. But Rhine is so adept at observing, reading, and understanding people that all of the characters spring to life in full color on the pages. Cecily, though a somewhat bratty and precocious 13-year-old sister wife, is lovely as is Jenna, the 18-year-old sister wife, who's lively gray eyes miss nothing and wisdom comes in handy a great deal for Rhine. Housemaster Vaughn, the supposed villain, House Governor (and husband) Linden, Gabriel, the domestics (children bought to serve each sister wife), the kitchen staff, and the party goers all resonate as real people with real feelings, thoughts, and motivations. Ms. DeStefano should be proud of her ability to make each person, however small their role, unique and multi-dimensional. The only small negative I could mention on that front is her lack of characterization of Rowan, Rhine's fraternal twin brother.
The story moves and flows fluidly from page to page and I found myself lost in it as though I weren't actually reading but was living there in the mansion with Rhine and her sister wives. A feat for someone like me who has ADD and is easily distracted away from books I want to read! I didn't want the story to end and yet, when it did, I was pleased that Ms. DeStefano wrote it in such a way that it could actually stand alone, though I know it's a trilogy. I could be happy with the ending even if I never get to read the other two books.

Review:
This is the final volume of the Journey to Wudang, and it completes the second series in a satisfying manner. We had to expect it to end with a few loose ends, given that Kylie Chan has already stated that there will be a third trilogy to complete the story of Emma Donahoe and her family. Heaven to Wudang is the sixth book about Emma, John, Simone and Leo and although it’s supposed to be the final book of the second trilogy, it doesn’t come across that way.
I love the colourful world Kylie Chan created in this series with the use of Chinese mythology. This is very different from other European mythology-based fantasy novels that many of us have already read a stack of. It’s her world that draws me to these stories and keeps me coming back.
If you have enjoyed the previous books in this series, then you will enjoy the last in the latest trilogy, but be warned, there will be more books continuing the series.

Review:
This book returns to the setting of the ‘Kingmaker, Kingbreaker’ and ‘Fisherman’s Children’ series. It’s a prequel that is about the origin of the magical disaster that dominated so much of both series. Readers of the earlier books will know the core of this story—that the Mage Morgan Danfey destroyed the land of Dorana, poisoning the earth and transforming its inhabitants into twisted monstrosities; that his corruption spread and that only by the efforts of another Mage, Barl Linden, was the small nation of Lur protected.
A Blight of Mages focuses on Barl Linden and Morgan Danfey and their relationship. Those who’ve read the other novels will know that these two are towering figures of history, and will know in broad terms what happens between them and what impact it has on their society.
If you have not read the other Kingmaker, Kingbreaker novels, then you’ll likely enjoy this a lot. The characters are powerful and interesting, and the plot will provide you with incentives to keep reading and find out what happens.

Kilbey's comments in May that year summed up the situation: "There is no immediate future for The Church ... Our address all crashed together ... We really have no label. We have a lot of money and our project is broken. We are trying to repayment of debts through our lawyers. Marty and I have no communication between us. No one is really leading us, so ... could have been our last recording. "
Perhaps surprisingly Kilbey later defined Magician Among the Spirits "a load of waste." Although now considered a transitional album, received mixed reviews from fans, despite the rock guitar sound of their single Comedown. The album also featured a band resurfaced with Powles and assuming the role of full-time member, and Koppes again committed to the group. However, the circumstances behind the release of the album unfortunately led to the lowest point of the career of The Church.
After the departure of Koppes in 1992, the band members put more attention to other projects. Willson-Piper did collaborations with Brix Smith (The Fall), Adult Net, Linda Perry (4 Non Blondes) and Cinerama, while also starting a side project with ex-members of All About Eve called Seeing Stars and writing new solo material. Kilbey wrote the music for the Australian film Blackrock and recorded an album and instrumental environmental, Gilt trip with his brother Russell P. Kilbey. In the absence of works of The Church, Kilbey, Koppes Powles and also worked some time together in the studio. The material resulting from these sessions (initially called The Reformation, but was altered at the request of Powles) as a courtesy to Willson-Piper, were largely united in fast recording sessions. Not too good in quality, but environmental luxuriously, the eccentrically titled pharmakoi / Distance-crunching honchos with echo units provided a greater emphasis on songs with guitar sound domain, in the uncontrolled experimentation Magician Among the Spirits.
The strained relations within the group however was cooked over low heat. The new drummer Tim Powles was exceptional ease disagreements. While Kilbey and Willson-Piper had had differences on many occasions, their relationship suffered recent problems. Kilbey began to declare a formal end of the band: After a final swansong Digino (entitled Au revoir, please), The Church would take a long rest. But the four agreed to play a series of concerts Electric Australia. The tremendous success of the "final concert" in Sydney revealed that perhaps the announcement of the end of the bada had been rushed.
The results of new recording sessions accounted for the band return to their roots. Incorporating influences from the 70, as the effects of radio and temperature, the material was primarily based on the interaction of the guitar Willson-Piper and Koppes. For the first time the band was also itself (under the tutelage of Powles). Originally titled Bastard Universe, the next album will be renamed as Hologram of Allah Willson-Piper after considering the original title too old. Concerns about Islamic fundamentalist reactions to a potentially blasphemous title did the band choose the most neutral Hologram of Baal (Canaanite referring to God). Published under a new contract with the British indie label Cooking Vinyl, the album was distrib in the U.S. by Thirsty Ear. Abum a limited edition bonus disc containing a jam session with a nearly continuous 80 minutes, with the title Bastard universe.
The rejuvenated and reformed band undertook their first U.S. tour, Australia and Europe in many years. The idea of releasing a live album called Bag of Bones was launched, but was eventually discarded. Instead, he recorded a collection of versions, showing the influences of the band. In August 1999, less than a year after the publication of Hologram of Baal, published A box of birds, which contained an unusual selection of songs from Ultravox to Iggy Pop, The Monkees or Neil Young. The inside cover of the CD was designed as interchangeable, with 10 designs created by fans.
A tour followed the release of new album. A new drama hit the full band on tour in New York when Kilbey was arrested for trying to buy heroin. It forced the group to improvise a performance with Wilson on vocals. One night in jail and a day of community service in the subway in Manhattan was the penance Kilbey. "A little drug is what should have every aging rock star under his belt," Kilbey said later.
The recordings for a new album were painstakingly slow due to the numerous commitments of the components and the geographical distance between them (in Sweden Kilbey, Willson-Piper in England and the rest in Australia). Requiring much time to devote to personal projects and other collaborations (including a brief meeting with Willson-Piper All About Eve), the four were found in a few meetings and separated in time. Partially recorded in Sweden and Australia, the resultant After everything now this was released in January 2002, showing the softer elemntos group. With only three of ten rock songs in all, the tranquil sounds predominate. A diverse range of guitar effects interact with elements of piano and acoustic guitar. The subsequent world tour also contained more relaxed setting, with most acoustic songs performed primarily by the guest pianist David Lane.
The fans could not wait much longer without new material from The Church, so in late 2002 was released the double album Parallel Universe. Unique in the catalog of the group, on the first disc appears Mixture subtitled version of the album remixed reorganized After everything now this, the result of collaboration with musicians Tim Powles Sydney. The second was a bonus disc that showed the songs resulting from the recording sessions After everything now this.
During the publication of Parallel Universe, The Church returned to the studio to record another album. More songs to be developed through a long process, the band decided to respect as much as possible the original recordings based on jam sessions. Stylistically, it caused a more raw sound, mostly recorded live with minimal remixes. As had become routine since Sometime anywhere, in some songs there was change of instruments among the members of the group, playing guitar Powles and Willson-Piper Sealine battery Maya. Published in Australia in October 2003 and the United States in February 2004, Forget yourself found strong support from fans and critics, hailing their sound fresh and monumental.
The prolific nature of the BNDA continued throughout 2004. Under the direction of manager Kevin Lane Keller (American fan and professor of marketing who had been working with them since 2001), The Church began to capitalize on the advantages offered by the Internet and the independent music industry. Following the album's commercial strategy bonus Hologram of Baal, Bastard Universe, the band released the first of a series of CD jam sessions, Jammed, through its website in September. A collection of unpublished recordings of yourself Forget sessions followed soon after with the ironic title Beside yourself.
In just one month released a new album. This time the band decided to review the old material to make an acoustic record, with the inclusion of new songs. Several of the most famous songs of his career underwent radical transformations. For the first time in several years The Unguarded Moment reformed (albeit with major modifications), a very old success which had been long estranged, was titled The time neglected, literal translation into Castilian, which was followed by a short acoustic tour at the end 2004, the album was nominated in 2005 for "Best Adult Contemporary Album" for Australian ARIA Awards. The same year he published the second part of Jammed, entitled Back with two beasts.
In March 2006, The Church Under the milky way he played as part of the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games that year. A new studio album, Uninvited, like the clouds, was published in April 2006.
In 2007 he recorded new music for the soundtrack of a short based on the book by Jeff Vandermeer, Shriek: an afterword. The band brought an album only available on the Internet that compiles the long songs and the film was released in August. Contiuación also was published in The moment neglected: the next moment.
In early 2009, Second Motion Records begins a series of albums by members of The Church in America. The last work of Steve Kilbey, Painkiller was released in February, the new album of Marty Willson-Piper, Nightjar, in March.
A recent press release announced that The Church plans to publish this year a new album, a movie soundtrack and two EPs of his own record label with performances by specific dates on the East Coast.
Published in January Shriek: excerpts from the soundtrack by Unorthodox Records label in association with the Wyrm and the remarkable publishing American writer of science fiction Jeff VanderMeer. In February The coffee hounds released EP, with only vocal and instrumental versions, as well as the classic Kate Bush, Hounds of Love.
Unorthodox Records will release the new album Untitled # 23 in March to coincide with scheduled performances by Australia. The album contained 10 songs from epics simplistic, unusual in their ability to be simultaneously obscure and accessible. An album irresistibly melodic, heavy, psychedelic, while emotional and personal. The band has succeeded in creating a work of art nice to hear, with guitars and rhythms meshed acoustic framed on a journey of intrigue and understanding. They also released an EP titled 4-song EP Pangaea, which contains three songs not included on the album, So May love find us on a musical exploration as part of 15 minutes.
The musical style of The Church has changed dramatically during his career. The first songs were mostly structured. She never said, the first single, highlighted a new wave song with vocals inspired by the laconic Kilbey almost recitative inspired by David Bowie. Short songs, guitar-based rhythms dominated his debut. A similar style can be found in the early XTC, Television, The Beatles and Echo & The Bunnymen. It was unusual at this time experimenting with long songs in different sections (Is This Where You Live, 1981). The prominent use of the guitar 12-string Rickenbacker Willson-Piper led to comparisons with The Byrds, yet there are many stylistic parallels.
The second album, The Blurred Crusade, refined sound and influences brought to the forefront of 60. The single Almost with you concisely represents this style, playing the guitar arpeggios Willson-Piper, single atmospheric and unusual expressions of Peter Koppes, Ploog with strong drum beats, and dark, velvety voice with intonation between Kilbey singing and conversation. The blurred crusade also contained a song by psychedelic art-rock (You Took).
Seance, the third album, was an attempt to enrich the sound of The Church with synthesizers and electronic production. Prepared under the auspices of Nick Launay (Midnight Oil, Kate Bush), is shown in its most eccentric, especially the drum sound, like the sound of a cannon. At Travel by Thought, Seance features a psychedelic improvised and experimental sound. Sounds provided by experimental guitar and keyboards also feature in the next, Remote luxury. The separation between the heavy sound of the guitar Koppes and Willson-Piper rhythm dissolves in favor of a more textured sound. Solos and riffs are increasingly replaced by complex guitar parts that are interlinked.
Heyday waiver synthesizer sounds almost completely. The production of Peter Walsh knocks transparent sound with most productions of the mid-80. Instead, it dominates the sound driven by 12-string guitar like a kaleidoscope with massive use of effects (echo, e-bow, ringing). Kilbey's voice clearly departs from the model of Bowie. Instead of synthetic strings, a real opera orchestra on some songs. Starfish (1988) combines some of guitar effects with a more rock sound profiling. This direction continues with Gold afternoon fix more transparent.
Priest = Aura (1992) reintegrated elements of progressive rock. The interaction of the guitar becomes increasingly complex. Rooted in the creative process long jam sessions, songs with a huge number of counterpoint and chords that are often unusual. A quieter sound is added to the palette acoustics, probably influenced by the experiments of My Bloody Valentine.
Sometime Anywhere (1994) reflects a radical break, caused by the departure of Peter Koppes. What is lost in the guitar arrangements in the complex interaction is offset by the massive use of sequencers and electronically generated sounds. The sound of melodies Willson-Piper monodic away jigsaw of jingle-jangle style, continuing this experimentation Magician Among the Spirits. The influence of krautrock bands like Can or of Neu! becomes obvious. A version of Steve Harley Ritz honors at 70.
However, Hologram of Baal is an attempt to return to sound more compact Starfish season following the departure of Peter Koppes, enriched with elements of music, while After everything now this is defined by a more current sound, relaxed, Donino so orchestral.
Forget Yourself (2004) summarizes the different phases of The Church, tending to sound edgy and almost encyclopedic use of guitars and effects units. Production imposes a harsh sound, quasi-live and stratified.
Most Church lyrics were composed by Steve Kilbey, who was the lyricist almost exclusively in all albums to Remote luxury. Until then Kilbey had contributed songs as demos basically completed the sessions, while the arrangement was a group effort, especially led by Peter Koppes. All this changed from Heyday in 1985, when the songs were more the result of long jam sessions. The music consists primarily in the study, after which Kilbey writes texts. His lyrics and poems are often described as surreal, but flatly rejected Kilbey any fixed meaning of his poetry, categorized themselves as "art for art's sake."
Inspecting the core of his work, we can mention several recurring themes: myths, legends, dreams and nightmares, visions, fantasies drugs, Biblical Orientalism and non-Christian motifs. These issues are joined using circular numerous puns and references. More recently Kilbey has stated that his poetic questions are "factory of love and fear, tenmtación and creation, and our eternal search for meaning." Often trying to find a sketch with a few stimuli and suggests a course full epic, leaving the details to the listener's imagination.
The Church handled his texts in a somewhat subversive. Surprisingly, since the publication of Starfish, had refused to accompany the text to the albums, with the idea that the listener should hear the music sung rather than read it. A Kilbey likes the idea of an apparition lyric in the listener's head, generating many new and unexpected meanings. However, you can find online the complete collection of texts of songs from The Church. In most albums by The Church at least provides a text and vocal song written and sung by Peter Koppes and Marty Willson-Piper.
