FICTION: The Electric Man Will Come Tonight By Sarah Fiete

September 20, 2011
To: Special Agent Darius Peterson
From: Detective Emma Lore
Subject: Lyle, Dawnings Case—New Evidence

Special Agent Peterson—
Do not think we are withholding information from you; in fact, we’ve gone great lengths to make your investigation easier in full cooperation with ours. I know you asked for full disclosure, which we promised, but that did not mean immediate disclosure. I only preface these findings with such a clarification so that you will not think we are intent on being one step ahead of you (such was the accusation concerning last year’s Mull Harbor case, if you recall). You know I have no personal gripe with military involvement, and I’m sure your efforts at this stage are invaluable to us. It’s been almost a week since the disappearances and our need for fast action is more important than ever.
It is also of the utmost importance that we work together because the following evidence has thrown the whole investigation into confusing new light—like finding the ghost of a smoking gun. We’ve already agreed that the disappearances of Marguerite Lyle and Kimberly Dawnings coincide (albeit loosely) with the tragedy at the electrical plant, but until this evidence surfaced I was sure they were unrelated. Now I don’t know what to think, especially with the incapacitation of Lacy Dawnings. It’s almost as though Marguerite, Kimberly, and Lacy decided to play one big joke on everyone and used their phones to do it. Sadly, that’s my leading theory.
Of course, I cannot imagine a motive so great that it would send Lacy Dawnings into psychiatric care. I know you agree with me when I say Lacy’s inability to speak or look anyone in the eye without having shrieking fits does not look staged. So unless something went horribly wrong, there goes my theory.
You’ll be pleased to hear, though, that it was through Lacy that this new development came about. People tend to disagree with your “get info and go” attitude concerning this patient, especially people in my department who don’t think we can trust her when she’s in such a state. However, when we brought her her decimated cell phone remains and she became wildly hysterical, I knew we were onto something. We had already examined Kimberly’s incoming and outgoing phone calls (you have these records), but we had yet to go through the text messages. We have received a copy of her text messages from the past few weeks from her cell phone provider, which I have pasted in the body of this e-mail. There aren’t nearly as many as one might suspect a college-age female to have, but as we discovered in interviews, Kimberly was very studious and did not socialize much. She had a strong relationship with her younger sister, though, which makes Lacy’s current state a bit more understandable.
I know you and your team are currently caught up in another case as well, but if you have any idea what this means, we would appreciate your insight.

Good luck—
Detective Lore

TO: Lacy, 8:04 a.m.
The power plant I pass on the way to Krillton. The top of it looks like it was torn off and the rest is all black like it was burned away.

FROM: Lacy, 2:37 p.m.
What happened????

TO: Lacy, 2:39 p.m.
Dont know, Id guess tornado and fire but no one seems to know or even remember a close tornado. Power still on here but weird. Lights look more blue than usual.

FROM: Lacy, 2:40 p.m.
Diff bulbs?

TO: Lacy, 2:45 p.m.
No I looked and they look the same, dirty with bugs

FROM: Lacy, 2:46 p.m.
Well that doesnt make sense then, the LIGHT cant change

TO: Lacy, 2:47 p.m.
I dont know how to explain it… it just… DID

FROM: Lacy, 2:48 p.m.
Hmm. ur goin crazy kim!!

TO: Lacy, 2:51 p.m.
I kinda feel like it…

SEPTEMBER 7

TO: Marguerite, 11:27 p.m.
Hey havent seen you at all today or yesterday, everything alright?

TO: Marguerite, 11:33 p.m.
Are you in the art studio? Ill leave a light on.

TO: Marguerite, 11:49 p.m.
Sorry Im actually going to shut it off, I cant sleep with this weird blue glow. Did they change all the lights or something?

TO: Marguerite 11:53 p.m.
Im in bed but I saw you drop in for a sec and then leave again, should I leave the door unlocked or do you have your key?

TO: Marguerite, 11:59 p.m.
That WAS you, wasnt it?

SEPTEMBER 8

FROM: Marguerite, 1:04 p.m.
Yeah things are fine.

TO: Marguerite, 3:01 p.m.
Ok but where are you? Sorry I dont mean to be nosy but Im just really weirded out right now.  No one remembers a huge storm last weekend and the power  (1/2)

TO: Marguerite, 3:01 p.m.
(2/2) plant is destroyed but we still have power but its giving off a blue glow everywhere and no one seems to notice or care.

FROM: Marguerite, 3:01 p.m.
Things are fine.

FROM: Marguerite, 3:02 p.m.
By the way I was not in the room last night.

TO: Marguerite, 3:03 p.m.
At all?

FROM: Marguerite, 3:17 p.m.
No. Where are you now?

TO: Marguerite, 3:18 p.m.
Our room!! Thoroughly freaked out now.

FROM: Marguerite, 3:21 p.m.
I know who that was though.

TO: Marguerite, 3:22 p.m.
Who was what? In our room?

FROM: Marguerite, 3:22 p.m.
Did he look like a person?

TO: Marguerite, 3:23 p.m.
HE??? And of course, I thought it was you.

FROM: Marguerite, 3:23 p.m.
Was he wearing a piece of twisted metal as a hat but didn’t really have legs?

TO: Marguerite, 3:24 p.m.
Oh youre messing with me. I get it. Ha ha. Except seriously, you cant freak me out like that, not now.

FROM: Marguerite, 3:24 p.m.
And he was either all in shadow or a light aquamarine like the light?

TO: Marguerite, 3:25 p.m.
Youre creative. New painting?

FROM: Marguerite, 3:25 p.m.
And his hands smelled like burning bricks when he put them over your mouth

FROM: Marguerite, 3:25 p.m.
And told you it was okay, he just needs to watch you sleep

TO: Marguerite, 3:29 p.m.
You…are a strange one, Marguerite

FROM: Marguerite, 3:31 p.m.
And he doesn’t know how long he’ll stay

FROM: Marguerite, 3: 31 p.m.
Or why exactly they came

FROM: Marguerite, 3:31 p.m.
But the timing was right so they had to come

FROM: Marguerite, 3:32 p.m.
And he just wants to watch you

FROM: Marguerite, 3:34 p.m.
Did his eyes look like black pits?

FROM: Marguerite,  3:37 p.m.
If you say yes you’re lying. He doesn’t have eyes. Just a cluster of wires pulled from a soft spot on his face that writhe like tongues when he talks. “Talks.”

FROM: Marguerite, 4:18 p.m.
I won’t be back again tonight. I hope you’ll forgive me.

TO: Marguerite, 4:24 p.m.
Brava on the story, sorry I couldnt read it til I was out of class. I want to see this painting when youre done.

TO: Marguerite, 4:25 p.m.
And forgive you for what? You dont have to be in the room.

TO: Marguerite, 11:37 p.m.
By the way, in case you do come back, I locked the door. I know its dumb but I feel creeped out by your story, so job well done, I guess.

FROM: Marguerite, 11:37 p.m.
It doesn’t matter, he’ll come in under the door anyway.

FROM: Marguerite, 11:37 p.m.
Or from the outlets

FROM: Marguerite, 11:38 p.m.
I honestly don’t know how he travels but he’ll be there tonight.

TO: Marguerite, 11:40 p.m.
Stop itttttt, are you TRYING to give you nightmares?

FROM: Marguerite, 11:40 p.m.
Nightmares? No, Kimberly. I’m trying to warn you.

TO: Marguerite, 11:41 p.m.
Warn me? About what?

FROM: Marguerite, 11:41 p.m.
He was connected to me but I couldn’t stand it anymore. I told him to watch you instead. YOU are his now.

TO: Marguerite, 11:42 p.m.
What are you talking about?

FROM: Marguerite, 11:43 p.m.
Don’t worry. He just needs to watch you sleep. It’s about the impulses inside of us, he told me. But we move too much when we’re awake.

FROM: Marguerite, 11:43 p.m.
If you can sleep, you won’t be in any danger.

TO: Marguerite, 11:45 p.m.
Danger? Thanks for the bedtime story, but Im tired, goodnight.

FROM: Marguerite, 11:58 p.m.
I couldn’t sleep.

SEPTEMBER 9

TO: Marguerite, 12:04 a.m.

TO: Marguerite, 12:08 a.m.

TO: Marguerite, 12:11 a.m.
Help me every1 else will think im crazy or dreaming but hes just how u described except the wires are moving but i cant hear anything

FROM: HIDDEN NUMBER, 12:11 a.m.
Put down the phone Kimberly. I just want to watch you.

FROM: HIDDEN NUMBER, 12:11 a.m.
Yes of course I can hear you. And I AM talking to you.

FROM: HIDDEN NUMBER, 12:12 a.m.
If I can’t watch your friend then I’ll have to watch you.

FROM: HIDDEN NUMBER, 12:12 a.m.
Why? Because I can’t find her.

FROM: HIDDEN NUMBER, 12:12 a.m.
Yes. I guess in that case, I would not be able to watch you anymore, either.

FROM: Marguerite, 8:03 a.m.
I told you.

TO: Marguerite, 8:04 a.m.
Where were you?? I needed your help!! And why wont you answer my call??

FROM: Marguerite, 8:05 a.m.
I can’t keep my phone on during the night anymore. Besides, I couldn’t have helped you. And I don’t want to talk about this out loud. Did you sleep?

TO: Marguerite, 8:06 a.m.
I tried, Marg, I tried. And I tried to act like it was a dream but how could it be a dream? I NEVER WENT TO SLEEP.

FROM: Marguerite, 8:08 a.m.
Well I’ve given you advice but beyond that I can’t help you. Especially at night. They more lights are on, the easier it will be for them to find me.

TO: Marguerite, 8:09 a.m.
Wait… are you still on campus?

TO: Marguerite, 8:11 a.m.
I thought your side of the room looked emptier. You cant just run away from this. I bet this is happening to other people. I bet no one is saying anything(1/2)

TO: Marguerite, 8:11 a.m.
(2/2) to anyone else because everyone is afraid of looking crazy or doesnt know what to do about it.

FROM: Marguerite, 8:24 a.m.
It doesn’t matter. Kimberly, they could kill us and no one would ever know what did it. By the way leaving the lights on will make him come there faster.

TO: Marguerite, 8:25 a.m.
THEY????

FROM: Marguerite, 8:27 a.m.
If your theory is correct.

TO: Marguerite, 8:28 a.m.
What can we do?

FROM: Marguerite, 8:32 a.m.
Learn to fall asleep with him watching you.

TO: Marguerite, 8:32 a.m.
You didnt.

SEPTEMBER 10

TO: Marguerite, 1:49 a.m.
hes here again

SEPTEMBER 11

TO: Marguerite, 7:44 a.m.
I cant do it. I tried and I cant do it. He seemed angry that I wasnt asleep and that made it worse. At least he went away before sunrise again.

FROM: Lacy, 3:36 p.m.
Kimber havent heard from u in a while u busy? How r u?

TO: Lacy, 4:09 p.m.
Yeah busy. Tired.

FROM: Lacy, 4:10 p.m.
Well thats nothin new i guess, hang in there!! :)

TO: Marguerite, 8:49 p.m.
Why cant the sun just stay up?

TO: Marguerite, 8:51 p.m.
Hey you think if we convinced everyone to stop using power the electric man would go away? Isnt he coming from the weird blue light?

SEPTEMBER 12

TO: Marguerite, 4:32 p.m.
Im exhausted. And it took me three minutes to spell exhausted right. Skipped class, wouldnt be able to pay attention anyway, but cant sleep in day even. Nerves hyper.

TO: Marguerite, 6:59 p.m.
I want to tell someone but last night when I asked him what would happen if I did he gave me a shock.

TO: Marguerite, 7:00 p.m.
It was the worst pain Ive ever felt. I cant believe Im alive.

TO: Marguerite, 7:46 p.m.
Please help me. If you got away from them, tell me what you did. I dont think Im going to last another night.

A final note on this, Special Agent Peterson— the phone records that are currently in your possession show that there was a phone call made at 8:09 p.m. on September 12th  from a payphone approximately five miles from Krillton’s campus. I might be being superstitious, but it could be important to note that the location of this phone is under the control of a different power plant than the one that was destroyed. There is also an investigation under way to see exactly how this destruction occurred and how the campus is being powered without it, because it seems that no one could tell us.

We can’t prove that the payphone call came from Marguerite as much as we can’t prove that the events in question have anything to do with electric-based “Enemies from the Final Frontier,” as you once put it. However, as I said, we don’t seem to be getting anywhere and the chances that Marguerite and Kimberly are still alive are getting smaller every minute. Any help you can offer will be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
Detective Lore
