Description:

A captivating story, an ancient evil and a mission that will lead Karigan through time itself...

Karigan s will proves no match for the Rider's call; ghostly hoofbeats sounding in her mind, visions of the freedom of the open road, all calling her back to the king's service as a Green Rider. Karigan resists it, but when she wakes up to find herself - in her nightdress - on horseback and halfway across the country, her destiny is clear: she is a Green Rider.

As she discovers, it's not a good time to be called to serve. For a thousand years the D'Yer Wall, a physical and magical barrier protecting the land from the ancient, corrupted Blackveil Forest, has held. For a thousand years the forest, an arboreal prison containing one of Sacoridia's greatest enemies, has been quiet. Not anymore. The wall has been breached, unnatural, lethal creatures are finding their way into Sacoridia, a dark sentience is stirring and the Green Rider magic itself is failing. And in the midst of it all, Karigan is about to be called to her duty...

Review:

Green Rider was the first novel published by Kristen Britain back in 1998, it has been rereleased along with the other three books in the series in 2011. The second book First Rider’s Call was published in 2003, the third, The High King’s Tomb in 2007 and the latest, Blackveil in February 2011.

It is lucky that I’ve picked up all four book together as I don’t know that I’d be able to handle waiting four to five years for the next instalment of a series I enjoyed reading.

Book 2 First Rider’s Call continues on the Green Rider series with Karigan returning to Sacor City and taking up position as one of the King’s elite group of Green Riders again. A year of uneventful service passes before the kingdom of Sacoridia is in peril again, with the dark magic of the Black Forest finding a way past the D’Yer Wall that has kept Sacoridia safe for over 1000 years.

This plot reminded me a bit of Terry Goodkind’s seeker series with the magical wall dividing the nations. That being said, I’ve also seen praise by Goodkind for the Green Rider series.

With the magic seeping into Sacoridia, things go haywire and the nation needs to be saved.

Again, this is a good solid read and part of a well written series by Britain.
